We have been asked by our lecturer to watch a play written by Shakespeare. I was quite excited at first because I think this play would be as great as the previous Shakespeare’s play that I have watched before but then when I arrived at the play (I’m a bit late, the play was already on), I was quite shocked because the title of the story is ‘Wallah’ (I thought it’s a ‘war lord’-I know, my fault, Shakespeare won’t do a play like that hehehe…).
Actually, this story is about a family troupe of English actors travelling in India. Tony Buckingham and his wife Carla are the actor-managers of the troupe. They travel around the towns and villages giving performances of Shakespearean plays. They have acted his play in India and one day, the couple's daughter Lizzie Buckingham, falls in love with Sanju, a wealthy young Indian playboy who is also have a relationship with Manjula, the glamorous Bombay film star. We can see the changing face of India through their travels. For examples, Maharajas become hotel owners, the old is replaced by the new, sports become more important than culture and the theatre is replaced by Bollywood movies. Through this play, I manage to see the costumes during the Shakespeare’s time and can actually watch the stage performance in it.
